National Park

El Teide National Park is the largest and oldest park in the Canary Islands. Its landscape focuses around Teide which, at 3,718 metres, is the highest peak in Spain and whose last eruption dates back to 1798. The volcanic cones and lava flows form an extraordinary combination of shapes and colours providing a habitat for a floral diversity of extraordinary biological value.

Teide National Park was declared in 1954 with the aim of protecting the landscape of impressive beauty and high ecological value around the colossal volcano.

Teide provides shelter for many unique plant and animal species, such as Teide broom (Spartocytisus supranubius), Tower of Jewels (Echium wildpretii), Echium webbii, Bencomia exstipulata, Descurainia bourgaeana, Pterocephalus lasiospermus and Stemmacantha cynaroides. The Park's most important species are the invertebrates: over 700 insect species have been catalogued, and 50% of these are native to the area. The Park is also home to a few reptile species such as the Tenerife Lizard (Gallotia galloti) and birds such as Egyptian vultures, sparrow hawks, kestrels and red kites. Mammals, however, are in short supply, with mouflon sheep, rabbits and 5 bat species heading the list.
